Australian dance/pop group I’m Talking have announced a new remix pack of their iconic hit ‘Holy Word’.
First released in 1985, ‘Holy Word’ is the band’s last top-10 single and features co-lead vocalist Zan Abeyratne on lead vocals. The song now receives the widely celebrated Dr Packer treatment along with reboots from Filthy Lucre and YolaDisko.
I’m Talking formed in 1983, around the same time Madonna, Break Machine and Prince were just starting to emerge as musical forces. The dance band’s music looked back to the golden era of disco, whilst also embracing the emerging dance music technologies of drum machines, samplers and synths.
When the Rock Steady Crew spun on cardboard at the old Olympic swimming pool, I’m Talking were right there on the bill performing to Melbourne’s first crop of breakers. Their third gig took over night club Inflation with people clamouring to get in to see what all the fuss was about. When Wham toured Melbourne, George Michael asking his management team to try and sign the band.
Fronted by the powerful young vocalists Kate Ceberano and Zan Abeyratne, the band went on to have five top charting hits in Australia. Their debut and only album, Bear Witness, produced by Fred Maher of Scritti Politti and Lou Reed fame, was certified gold.
Even back in the 80s the band celebrated the art of the remix. Every single release had it’s own 12” mix with luminaries with Francois K, SAW, and members of Scritti Politti doing their funky moves on the tracks.
Now the art of the remix is unleashed once again on one of their most classic moments, ‘Holy Word’.
“Fact: if Dua Lipa or
Katy Perry released a song as good as I’m Talking’s ‘Holy Word’… it would
rightly be hailed as a pop masterpiece” – Cameron Adams,
